Issue and manage cards

Issue virtual or physical debit cards, freeze and unfreeze them, and see why a card may be frozen.

From Cards you can issue a virtual or a physical debit card for yourself or your team, see its details and activity, and freeze it at any time.

Freeze and unfreeze

Open the card and choose Freeze. A frozen card declines new payments until you choose Unfreeze. Freezing is instant, so it is the first thing to do if a card is lost or you see a payment you do not recognise.

A card that froze by itself

If your business has a receipt rule and a card payment above the threshold has no receipt, the card can be frozen until the receipt is added or waived. The card page says so. Add the receipt and it unfreezes. See Receipts inbox and receipt rules.

Who can issue cards, and how much a card can spend, depends on your role and on your payment rules. Owners and admins set those rules. See Payment limits and approvals.

Common questions

What is the difference between a virtual and a physical card?

A virtual card exists only as details in the app, so you can use it online straight away. A physical card is a plastic card for in-person payments and cash. Both are debit cards drawing on the account they are issued from.

My card was declined. Why?

The common reasons are that the card is frozen, the account balance is too low, or a payment rule blocked it, such as a daily limit. Open the card and the payment in the app to see which. If it is still unclear, ask Athena or contact support.

My card is frozen and I did not freeze it. Why?

Most often it is a receipt rule: a card payment needed a receipt and none was added. Add the receipt, or ask an owner or admin to waive it, and the card unfreezes.
